Negation: not, no and don't

How to say “not” in Hindi: नहीं in most sentences, मत in commands, and न in polite requests, signs and a few fixed patterns.

नहीं (naheen): the everyday “not”

(naheen) means “not” and also “no”. It goes just before the verb.

In the present habitual (“I don't eat”), the small verb , , or is usually dropped after : (main maans naheen khaataa, I don't eat meat). With the plain verb “to be”, you keep it: (vah ghar par naheen hai, he isn't at home).

  • मैं शराब नहीं पीता।Main sharaab naheen peetaa.I don't drink alcohol. (man speaking)
  • वह घर पर नहीं है।Vah ghar par naheen hai.He isn't at home.
  • हम कल नहीं आएँगे।Ham kal naheen aayenge.We won't come tomorrow.
  • मैंने खाना नहीं खाया।Mainne khaanaa naheen khaayaa.I didn't eat.

मत (mat): “don't” in commands

To tell someone not to do something, use (mat) with the command form. It is most natural with and : or (mat jaao, jaao mat: don't go). With , is also common in everyday speech.

(na) is softer and more formal. You will see it on signs and in polite notices, often with a verb ending in -एँ (-en): (kripyaa yahaan dhoomrapaan na karen, please do not smoke here).

  • चिंता मत करो।Chintaa mat karo.Don't worry.
  • आप चिंता मत कीजिए।Aap chintaa mat keejiye.Please don't worry. (polite)
  • कृपया यहाँ धूम्रपान न करें।Kripyaa yahaan dhoomrapaan na karen.Please do not smoke here. (on a sign)

न (na) and other negative words

(na) also appears in the pattern … (na … na, neither … nor), and at the end of a sentence as a friendly “right?”: (aap aayenge na?, you'll come, won't you?).

Words like “never”, “nothing” and “nobody” are built with : (kabhee naheen, never), (kuchh naheen, nothing), (koee naheen, nobody). Unlike standard English, Hindi uses them with a negative verb: (mainne kuchh naheen khaayaa, I didn't eat anything).

  • मैं न मांस खाता हूँ, न मछली।Main na maans khaataa hoon, na machhlee.I eat neither meat nor fish. (man speaking)
  • आप कल आएँगे न?Aap kal aayenge na?You'll come tomorrow, won't you?
  • वह कभी देर से नहीं आती।Vah kabhee der se naheen aatee.She is never late.
