Come in, Salman, have a seat. Tell me a little about yourself.
Salman

I work at reception. I check guests in and listen to their complaints.
Ms Rao
Kyaa aapne kabhee kisee mushkil mehmaan ko sambhaalaa hai?
Have you ever handled a difficult guest?
Salman
Jee haan, kaee baar. Ek baar ek mehmaan kaa saamaan kho gayaa thaa. Mainne pooree raat fon kiye, taaki subah tak unhen unkaa baig mil jaaye.
Yes, several times. Once a guest's luggage went missing. I made phone calls all night so that he would have his bag back by the morning.
Ms Rao
Aur baig mil gayaa?
And did he get it back?
Salman

Salman
Aapkaa hotal bahut baraa hai, aur yahaan videshee mehmaan bhee bahut aate hain. Main yahaan naee cheezen seekhne ke liye aanaa chaahtaa hoon, taaki aage chalkar main mainejar ban sakoon.
Your hotel is very big, and lots of foreign guests come here too. I want to come here to learn new things, so that later on I can become a manager.
Ms Rao

Salman
Jee zaroor, main aaj hee bhej doongaa. Mujhe yah maukaa dene ke liye dhanyavaad.
Certainly, I'll send it today. Thank you for giving me this opportunity.
Understand
Formal Hindi at work
In an interview, both sides use (aap) and often add (jee) to the first name: (Salmaan jee). (jee) on its own is a polite “yes” or “I'm listening”, and (jee haan), (jee zaroor) are polite ways to agree. Formal speech also prefers (dhanyavaad) to (shukriyaa) and adds (kripyaa), please.
The -इएगा (-iyegaa) form is an extra-polite request for later: (eemel kar deejiyegaa), please email (it to us); (bataaiyegaa), please let me know. Add -गा (-gaa) to the -इए (-iye) form you know. (apnaa), which you know from A2, is used in the key interview phrase (apne baare men bataaiye), “tell me about yourself”: the subject is , so “your” is .
| Everyday | Formal | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| (haan) | (jee haan) | yes |
| (bataaiye) | (bataaiyegaa) | please tell me (now / later) |
| (shukriyaa) | (dhanyavaad) | thank you |
| … (… bhej deejiye) | … (kripyaa … bhej deejiyegaa) | please send … |
Have you ever…? The present perfect
To talk about experience, use the simple past + / (hai / hain): … (kyaa aapne kabhee … sambhaalaa hai?), have you ever handled …? The (ne) rules are the same as in the simple past: (mainne padhaaee kee hai), I have studied; (main do baar Jaipur gayaa hoon), I've been to Jaipur twice.
In the negative, (hai) is usually dropped: (mainne aisaa kabhee naheen kiyaa), I've never done that. When you say when something happened, use the simple past instead: (mainne do hazaar bees men padhaaee pooree kee), I finished my studies in 2020.
Kyaa aapne pahle kabhee hotal men kaam kiyaa hai?Have you ever worked in a hotel before?
Main kabhee Mumbaee naheen gaee.I've never been to Mumbai. (a woman speaking)
In order to, so that: के लिए and ताकि
When the same person does both things, use the -ने (-ne) form of the verb + (ke liye): (main naee cheezen seekhne ke liye aanaa chaahtaa hoon), I want to come in order to learn new things.
(taaki), so that, starts a new part with its own verb, often with a different subject, and that verb is in the subjunctive: (mainne pooree raat fon kiye, taaki unhen unkaa baig mil jaaye), I made calls all night so that he would get his bag. After , the subjunctive stays even when the story is in the past.
Vah paise bachaane ke liye bas se jaatee hai.She goes by bus to save money.
Main Hindee seekh rahaa hoon, taaki apnee daadee se baat kar sakoon.I'm learning Hindi so that I can talk to my grandmother. (a man speaking)
More in the grammar: Commands and requests: आ, आओ, आइए · The simple past and the ने construction · The subjunctive: करूँ, करे, करें · Register: everyday and formal Hindi
