In Lucknow, Neelam Srivastava presents her organisation's mobile library project to a school committee chaired by the principal, Mrs Tripathi. Listen to the whole dialogue first, then line by line.
Mrs Tripathi
Namaste, Neelam jee. Kametee ke sab log aa gaye hain. Aap apnaa prezenteshan shuroo keejiye.
Hello, Neelam. Everyone on the committee is here. Please begin your presentation.
Neelam
Dhanyavaad. Aaj main aapko hamaaree “chaltee-phirtee laaibreree” yojnaa ke baare men bataaoongee. Sabse pahle main samasyaa kee baat karoongee, phir hamaare hal kee, aur aakhir men kharch kee. Jaisaa ki aap is slaaid men dekh sakte hain, hamaare sarve ke mutaabik shahar ke lagbhag aadhe sarkaaree skoolon men aaj bhee laaibreree naheen hai.
Thank you. Today I'll tell you about our “mobile library” project. First I'll talk about the problem, then about our solution, and finally about the costs. As you can see on this slide, according to our survey about half the state schools in the city still have no library.
Mr Rizvi
Maaf keejiye, beech men bol rahaa hoon. Kyaa yah aankraa sirf Lakhnaoo kaa hai?
Sorry to interrupt. Is that figure just for Lucknow?
Neelam
Jee haan, sirf Lakhnaoo kaa. Aur yahee vajah hai ki ham yah yojnaa yaheen se shuroo karnaa chaahte hain. Ab main hamaare hal par aatee hoon: ek bas, jismen do hazaar kitaaben hongee, aur jo har hafte paanch skoolon men jaayegee.
Yes, only for Lucknow. And that's exactly why we want to start the project right here. Now I come to our solution: a bus with two thousand books on board, which will go to five schools every week.
Mrs Tripathi
Yaanee har skool men bas hafte men ek baar hee aayegee?
So the bus will only come to each school once a week?
Neelam
Jee, hafte men ek baar, poore din ke liye. Bachche kitaaben ghar bhee le jaa sakenge. Sabse zarooree baat yah hai ki bachche apnee kitaaben khud chunenge, koee teechar unke liye naheen chunegaa.
Yes, once a week, for the whole day. The children will also be able to take books home. The most important thing is that the children will choose their books themselves; no teacher will choose for them.
Mr Rizvi
Ek savaal hai. Agar koee bachchaa kitaab vaapas na kare, yaa kitaab kharaab ho jaaye, to?
I have a question. What if a child doesn't give a book back, or a book gets damaged?
Neelam
Bahut achchhaa savaal hai. Agar main theek samjhee hoon, to aap poochh rahe hain ki nuksaan kaun bharegaa. Hamaare anubhav men aisaa bahut kam hotaa hai, phir bhee har saal iske liye thoraa alag bajat rakhaa jaataa hai.
That's a very good question. If I've understood correctly, you're asking who will pay for any losses. In our experience that happens very rarely, but even so, a small separate budget is set aside for it every year.
Mrs Tripathi
Aur kharch kitnaa hogaa? Hamaaraa bajat to bahut kam hai.
And how much will it cost? Our budget, you know, is very small.
Neelam
Main usee par aa rahee thee. Bas aur kitaabon kaa kharch hamaaree sansthaa degee. Skoolon se ham sirf itnaa chaahte hain ki ve bas ke liye jagah den, aur har baar ek teechar bachchon ke saath rahe.
I was just coming to that. Our organisation will pay for the bus and the books. All we ask of the schools is that they give the bus somewhere to park, and that a teacher stays with the children each time.
Mr Rizvi
Yah to sach men achchhee yojnaa hai. Main to kahoongaa ki hamen ise agle maheene se hee shuroo kar denaa chaahiye.
This really is a good project. For my part, I'd say we should start it as early as next month.
Neelam
Dhanyavaad, Rizvee saahab. Sankshep men: kitaaben ham laayenge, padhne vaale aapke skool denge. Agar kisee kaa aur koee savaal ho, to main yaheen hoon.
Thank you, Mr Rizvi. In short: we'll bring the books, and your schools will bring the readers. If anyone has any other questions, I'm right here.
Understand
Structuring a talk
A presentation is usually given in formal (aap) Hindi, often with English words for the technical parts. Tell your listeners where you are going and mark each step. A woman says (bataaoongee, aatee hoon); a man (bataaoongaa, aataa hoon).
| Hindi | Meaning |
|---|---|
| … (aaj main aapko … ke baare men bataaoongee.) | Today I'll tell you about … |
| …, …, … (sabse pahle …, phir …, aur aakhir men …) | First …, then …, and finally … |
| … (ab main … par aatee hoon.) | Now I come to … |
| , … (jaisaa ki aap is slaaid men dekh sakte hain, …) | As you can see on this slide, … |
| … (main is baat par zor denaa chaahoongee ki …) | I'd like to stress that … |
| … (sankshep men …) | In short …, to sum up … |
| (aapke savaalon kaa svaagat hai.) | Questions are welcome. |
Handling questions
Thank the person and check that you've understood before you answer. If you don't know, say so and promise to find out: that is polite and expected.
| Hindi | Meaning |
|---|---|
| (bahut achchhaa savaal hai.) | That's a very good question. |
| / … (agar main theek samjhee / samjhaa hoon, to aap poochh rahe hain ki …) | If I've understood correctly, you're asking … |
| / (main usee par aa rahee thee / rahaa thaa.) | I was just coming to that. |
| … (hamaare anubhav men …) | In our experience … |
| / (iskaa javaab main thoree der men doongee / doongaa.) | I'll answer that in a moment. |
| / (mujhe pakkaa naheen pataa, main pataa karke bataaoongee / bataaoongaa.) | I'm not sure; I'll find out and let you know. |
Emphasis:
Hindi stresses a word by putting a small particle right after it, so its position matters. (hee) means “only, exactly, the very”: (hafte men ek baar hee), only once a week; (agle maheene se hee), as early as next month. It joins onto some words: + = (yah + hee = yahee), + = (vah + hee = vahee), + = (us + hee = usee), + = (yahaan + hee = yaheen), + = (ab + hee = abhee). … (yahee vajah hai ki …), that's exactly why …, does the job of an English “it is … that” sentence.
(bhee) means “also” or “even”: (ek kitaab bhee naheen), not even one book. (to) sets up a contrast or a topic: … (main to kahoongaa ki …), for my part, I'd say …; (bajat to bahut kam hai), the budget, though, is very small.
| Hindi | Meaning |
|---|---|
| (main hee jaaoongee.) | I'll go (and nobody else). (a woman) |
| (main bhee jaaoongee.) | I'll go too. |
| (main to jaaoongee.) | I'll go, whatever the others do. |
| (aaj hee) | this very day, today itself |
| … (yahee vajah hai ki …) | That's exactly why … |
| … (sabse zarooree baat yah hai ki …) | The most important thing is that … |
More in the grammar: Emphasis: ही, भी, तो · Linking ideas: although, because of, therefore
