Speed:
  1. Harpreet

    माफ़ कीजिए, शिवगंगा एक्सप्रेस किस प्लेटफ़ॉर्म पर आएगी?

  3. Harpreet

  4. Clerk

  6. Clerk

Haan. Seedhe jaaiye, phir daayen muriye. Vahaan lift hai.

Yes. Go straight on, then turn right. There's a lift there.

  7. Harpreet

    बहुत धन्यवाद। जस्सी, यहाँ आओ। मेरा हाथ पकड़ो और भागो मत।

Bahut dhanyavaad. Jassee, yahaan aao. Meraa haath pakro aur bhaago mat.

Thank you very much. Jassi, come here. Hold my hand and don't run.

  9. Harpreet

    पहले प्लेटफ़ॉर्म पर चलो। वहाँ कुछ खाएँगे।

Pahle pletform par chalo. Vahaan kuchh khaayenge.

Understand

Instructions: तू, तुम and आप

You know the polite (aap) form ending in -इए (-iye) and the friendly (tum) form ending in -ओ (-o). There is a third form for (too): just the verb without -ना (-naa): (aa), come; (baith), sit. People use it with very close family and friends and with small children, and it can sound rude to anyone else, so it's good to recognise but best not to use yourself. Harpreet uses the (tum) form with her son: (aao), (pakro).

Announcements and signs use a formal form ending in -एँ (-en), the same form as “shall we…?” in chapter 8: (kripyaa dhyaan den), please pay attention.

Verb (too) (tum) (aap)
(aanaa), to come (aa) (aao) (aaiye)
(pakarnaa), to hold (pakar) (pakro) (pakriye)
(denaa), to give (de) (do) (deejiye)
(karnaa), to do (kar) (karo) (keejiye)
(peenaa), to drink (pee) (piyo) (peejiye)

Don't: मत and न

To tell someone not to do something, use (mat) with the instruction. It can go before or after the verb: (bhaago mat) or (mat bhaago), don't run. With (aap) it works the same way: (mat jaaiye), please don't go. Don't use (naheen) here.

Signs and announcements use the formal -एँ (-en) form with (na), a softer “not”: (kripyaa yahaan na baithen), please don't sit here. So: (naheen) is the everyday “not”, (mat) is “don't” in instructions, and (na) is the polite, formal “don't”.

  • भागो मत।Bhaago mat.Don't run.
  • यह पानी मत पीजिए।Yah paanee mat peejiye.Please don't drink this water.
  • अभी मत जाओ।Abhee mat jaao.Don't go yet.
  • कृपया यहाँ न बैठें।Kripyaa yahaan na baithen.Please don't sit here. (on a sign)

You'll have to: पड़ना

(aapko pul se jaanaa paregaa) means “you'll have to take the bridge”. It works like (mujhe jaanaa hai) from chapter 8: the person takes (ko), then comes the verb in -ना (-naa), then a form of (parnaa): (paregaa), will have to; (partaa hai), usually have to; (paraa), had to.

(parnaa) is for things you're forced to do by circumstances, like a late train. If the object is feminine, -ना and change to match it: (aapko Dillee men tren badalnee paregee), you'll have to change trains in Delhi.

  • आपको पुल से जाना पड़ेगा।Aapko pul se jaanaa paregaa.You'll have to take the footbridge.
  • मुझे एक घंटा इंतज़ार करना पड़ा।Mujhe ek ghantaa intazaar karnaa paraa.I had to wait for an hour.
  • आपको दिल्ली में ट्रेन बदलनी पड़ेगी।Aapko Dillee men tren badalnee paregee.You'll have to change trains in Delhi.

More in the grammar: Asking questions · Negation: not, no and don't · Possession: my, your and “to have” · Pronouns and politeness · Commands and requests: आ, आओ, आइए · Should and have to: चाहिए, है, पड़ना
