Understand

Numbers from 1 to 20

Learn these twenty numbers well: you'll use them every day for prices, times and phone numbers. Zero is (shoonya), but in phone numbers most people just say “zero”.

Phone numbers are read one digit at a time: 98 is (nau aath).

2 (do)12 (baarah)
3 (teen)13 (terah)
4 (chaar)14 (chaudah)

6 (chhah, said “chhe”)16 (solah)
7 (saat)17 (satrah)
8 (aath)18 (athaarah)
9 (nau)19 (unnees)
10 (das)20 (bees)

The tens, and the numbers in between

Here are the tens up to 100. Unlike English, every number from 21 to 99 is its own word. They look a bit like the numbers they're made of, but not in a regular way: 25 is (pachchees) and 45 is (paintaalees).

Don't try to learn them all now. Learn the tens, and look up other numbers in a number chart when you need them. The prices you use often will stick quickly.

Asking the price

To ask the price of one thing, say … (… kitne kaa hai?), “How much is …?”. The answer uses the same (kaa): (paanch rupaye kaa), five rupees. For the total, ask (kitne huye?), “How much does that come to?”.

(yah) and (vah), “he, she” from chapter 1, also mean “this” and “that”: (yah akhbaar), this newspaper. They're written this way but usually said “yeh” and “voh”. India's money is the rupee: (ek rupayaa), one rupee, and (do rupaye), two rupees.

  • यह अख़बार कितने का है?Yah akhbaar kitne kaa hai?How much is this newspaper?
  • बीस रुपये का।Bees rupaye kaa.Twenty rupees.
  • कितने हुए?Kitne huye?How much does that come to?
