Listen

Preeti and her new neighbour Amit talk about their mornings and evenings in Lucknow. Listen to the whole dialogue first, then line by line.

Speed:
  1. Amit

Preeti jee, aap kitne baje uthtee hain?

Preeti, what time do you get up?

  2. Preeti

Main chhah baje uthtee hoon. Phir main yog kartee hoon.

I get up at six. Then I do yoga.

  3. Amit

Chhah baje? Main aath baje uthtaa hoon.

At six? I get up at eight.

  4. Preeti

Aap kaam par kitne baje jaate hain?

What time do you go to work?

  5. Amit

Saadhe nau baje. Subah main chaay peetaa hoon aur akhbaar padhtaa hoon.

At half past nine. In the morning I drink tea and read the newspaper.

  6. Preeti

Aur aap shaam ko kyaa karte hain?

And what do you do in the evening?

  7. Amit

Main saat baje ghar aataa hoon, khaanaa banaataa hoon aur teevee dekhtaa hoon.

I come home at seven, cook and watch TV.

  8. Preeti

Main shaam ko padhtee hoon aur das baje sotee hoon.

In the evening I read, and I go to bed at ten.

Understand

What you usually do: करता हूँ, करती हूँ

You know from chapter 3 that verbs end in -ना (-naa) in the dictionary: (karnaa), to do. To say what you usually do, take off -ना (-naa) and add -taa for a man, -tee for a woman, and -te for several men, a mixed group, or a man you call (aap) or (tum). Then add , , or (hoon, hai, ho, hain) from chapter 1 at the end.

Your own gender matters. Amit says (main aath baje uthtaa hoon), and Preeti says (main chhah baje uthtee hoon). When you speak to someone with (aap), their gender matters: (aap kyaa karte hain?) to a man, (aap kyaa kartee hain?) to a woman.

Meaninga man, mena woman, women
I do (main kartaa hoon) (main kartee hoon)
you do (very intimate) (too kartaa hai) (too kartee hai)
you do (friendly) (tum karte ho) (tum kartee ho)
you do (polite) (aap karte hain) (aap kartee hain)
he / she does (vah kartaa hai) (vah kartee hai)
we do (ham karte hain) (ham kartee hain)
they do; he / she does (respect) (ve karte hain) (ve kartee hain)

Telling the time: बजे

(baje) means “o'clock”, and also “at … o'clock”: (saat baje), at seven. Ask (kitne baje?), at what time? To ask what time it is now, say (kyaa bajaa hai?).

Half past uses (saadhe) before the hour: (saadhe nau baje), 9:30. But 1:30 and 2:30 have their own words: (dedh baje) and (dhaaee baje).

TimeHindi
7:00 (saat baje)
7:15 (savaa saat baje)
7:30 (saadhe saat baje)
7:45 (paune aath baje), “a quarter to eight”
1:30 (dedh baje)
2:30 (dhaaee baje)
