Listen
On Monday at their office in Gurugram, Kavya asks her colleague Imran about his weekend in Rishikesh. Listen to the whole dialogue first, then line by line.
Kavya
इमरान जी, आपका वीकेंड कैसा रहा? आप कहीं गए?
Imraan jee, aapkaa veekend kaisaa rahaa? Aap kaheen gaye?
Imran, how was your weekend? Did you go anywhere?
Imran
हाँ, हम चार दोस्त ऋषिकेश गए। शुक्रवार रात की बस थी, और हम सुबह छह बजे पहुँचे।
Haan, ham chaar dost Rishikesh gaye. Shukravaar raat kee bas thee, aur ham subah chhah baje pahunche.
Yes, four of us friends went to Rishikesh. We took the bus on Friday night and got there at six in the morning.
Kavya
वाह! वहाँ आपने क्या किया?
Vaah! Vahaan aapne kyaa kiyaa?
Wow! What did you do there?
Imran
शनिवार को हमने राफ़्टिंग की। पानी बहुत ठंडा था, लेकिन बहुत मज़ा आया।
Shanivaar ko hamne raafting kee. Paanee bahut thandaa thaa, lekin bahut mazaa aayaa.
On Saturday we went rafting. The water was very cold, but it was great fun.
Kavya
और रविवार को?
Aur ravivaar ko?
And on Sunday?
Imran
रविवार को हम पहाड़ों में घूम रहे थे, और फिर बहुत बारिश हुई। हम सब गीले हो गए।
Ravivaar ko ham pahaaron men ghoom rahe the, aur phir bahut baarish huee. Ham sab geele ho gaye.
On Sunday we were walking in the hills, and then it rained a lot. We all got wet.
Kavya
अरे! मैं भी अगले महीने पहाड़ों में जाना चाहती हूँ। ऋषिकेश अच्छा रहेगा या मसूरी?
Are! Main bhee agle maheene pahaaron men jaanaa chaahtee hoon. Rishikesh achchhaa rahegaa yaa Masooree?
Oh dear! I want to go to the hills next month too. Would Rishikesh or Mussoorie be better?
Imran
मेरे ख़याल से ऋषिकेश। अगले महीने मसूरी में बहुत ठंड होगी। और ऋषिकेश में आपको राफ़्टिंग ज़रूर करनी चाहिए।
Mere khayaal se Rishikesh. Agle maheene Masooree men bahut thand hogee. Aur Rishikesh men aapko raafting zaroor karnee chaahiye.
I think Rishikesh. It'll be very cold in Mussoorie next month. And in Rishikesh you really should go rafting.
Kavya
राफ़्टिंग? लेकिन मैं तैर नहीं सकती।
Raafting? Lekin main tair naheen saktee.
Rafting? But I can't swim.
Imran
चिंता मत कीजिए। वे आपको लाइफ़ जैकेट देंगे, और एक गाइड भी साथ होगा।
Chintaa mat keejiye. Ve aapko laaif jaiket denge, aur ek gaaid bhee saath hogaa.
Don't worry. They'll give you a life jacket, and a guide will be with you too.
Kavya
ठीक है। तो मैं अगले महीने के लिए होटल बुक कर लेती हूँ।
Theek hai. To main agle maheene ke liye hotal buk kar letee hoon.
All right. Then I'll book a hotel for next month.
Imran
बहुत अच्छा। वापस आने के बाद मुझे सब बताइए।
Bahut achchhaa. Vaapas aane ke baad mujhe sab bataaiye.
Great. Tell me all about it when you get back.
Understand
Telling the story of a trip
Imran uses several of the A2 past forms. Verbs without an object follow the person: (ham Rishikesh gaye). Verbs with an object take (ne) and follow the object: (hamne raafting kee), because (raafting) is feminine. The past continuous sets the scene: (ham ghoom rahe the), we were walking around.
(ho jaanaa) means “to become, to get”: (ham geele ho gaye), we got wet. (ho gayaa) on its own means “it's done” or “that's it”. (mazaa aayaa), literally “fun came”, means “it was fun”.
| Form | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| simple past | (ham subah pahunche.) | We arrived in the morning. |
| simple past with (ne) | (hamne raafting kee.) | We went rafting. |
| (thaa) | (paanee thandaa thaa.) | The water was cold. |
| past continuous | (ham ghoom rahe the.) | We were walking around. |
| (ho jaanaa) | (ham geele ho gaye.) | We got wet. |
I want to: जाना चाहती हूँ
To say what you want to do, put the verb in its -ना (-naa) form before (chaahnaa), to want. changes like any verb, and the person is a normal subject: (main jaanaa chaahtee hoon), I want to go (a woman); (main jaanaa chaahtaa hoon), a man.
Don't mix it up with (chaahiye), where the person takes (mujhe): (mujhe ek hotal chaahiye), I need a hotel. For a polite offer, use the future you saw in chapter 11: (kyaa aap chaay peenaa chaahenge?), Would you like some tea?
- मैं अगले महीने पहाड़ों में जाना चाहती हूँ।Main agle maheene pahaaron men jaanaa chaahtee hoon.I want to go to the hills next month. (a woman speaking)
- हम ताजमहल देखना चाहते हैं।Ham Taajmahal dekhnaa chaahte hain.We want to see the Taj Mahal.
- मुझे एक छाता चाहिए।Mujhe ek chhaataa chaahiye.I need an umbrella.
