Understand
Days of the week
All the days end in (vaar), and they're all masculine. To say “on Monday”, add (ko) after the day: (somvaar ko). (budhvaar ko) can also mean “on Wednesdays”, for something that happens every week.
| Day | Hindi |
|---|---|
| Monday | (somvaar) |
| Tuesday | (mangalvaar) |
| Wednesday | (budhvaar) |
| Thursday | (guruvaar) |
| Friday | (shukravaar) |
| Saturday | (shanivaar) |
| Sunday | (ravivaar) |
आज, कल, परसों
(aaj) is today. (kal) means both “tomorrow” and “yesterday”. The verb tells you which: with (hai, is) it's usually tomorrow, and with (thaa, was) it's yesterday. In the same way (parson) is both “the day after tomorrow” and “the day before yesterday”.
- आज मंगलवार है।Aaj mangalvaar hai.Today is Tuesday.
- कल बुधवार है।Kal budhvaar hai.Tomorrow is Wednesday.
- कल सोमवार था।Kal somvaar thaa.Yesterday was Monday.
Months and dates
In everyday Hindi, the months are the English names said the Hindi way. For a date, say the number and then the month: (baarah maarch), 12 March. To ask the date, say (aaj kitnee taareekh hai?), What's the date today?
| Month | Hindi | Month | Hindi |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | (janvaree) | July | (julaaee) |
| February | (farvaree) | August | (agast) |
| March | (maarch) | September | (sitambar) |
| April | (aprail) | October | (aktoobar) |
| May | (maee) | November | (navambar) |
| June | (joon) | December | (disambar) |
