Namaste. Mujhe ek bachat khaataa khulvaanaa hai.

Hello. I'd like to open a savings account.

  2. Mr Negi

Jee, zaroor. Kyaa aap apnaa aadhaar kaard aur pain kaard laaee hain?

Yes, of course. Have you brought your Aadhaar card and PAN card?

  3. Anjum

Jee haan, donon laaee hoon. Aur mainne kal do foto bhee khinchvaaee theen.

Yes, I've brought both. And I had two photos taken yesterday as well.

  4. Mr Negi

Bahut achchhaa. Pahle yah form bhar deejiye. Agar koee dikkat ho, to mujhe bataaiye.

Very good. First, please fill in this form. If there's any problem, let me know.

  5. Anjum

Dhanyavaad. Khaate men kam se kam kitne paise rakhne parte hain?

Thank you. What's the minimum I have to keep in the account?

  6. Mr Negi

Kam se kam paanch hazaar rupaye. Naheen to har maheene chaarj lagtaa hai.

At least five thousand rupees. Otherwise there's a charge every month.

  7. Anjum

Theek hai. Aur kripyaa bataaiye, debit kaard kab tak milegaa?

All right. And could you tell me when I'll get the debit card?

  8. Mr Negi

Kaard ek hafte men aapke ghar ke pate par bhej diyaa jaayegaa.

The card will be sent to your home address within a week.

  9. Anjum

Ek baat aur. Mere paas dedh laakh rupaye kaa ek chek hai. Kyaa main use aaj hee jamaa kar saktee hoon?

One more thing. I have a cheque for one and a half lakh rupees. Can I pay it in today?

  10. Mr Negi

Jee haan. Khaataa aaj hee khul jaayegaa. Uske baad chek jamaa kar deejiyegaa, paise do din men aapke khaate men aa jaayenge.

Yes. The account will be opened today. After that, please pay the cheque in, and the money will be in your account in two days.

  11. Anjum

Bahut achchhaa. Mere abboo bhee apnaa khaataa Lakhnaoo se yahaan traansfar karvaanaa chaahte hain.

Great. My father would also like to have his account transferred here from Lucknow.

  12. Mr Negi

To unhen agle hafte kisee bhee din bhej deejiye.

Then send him in any day next week. The bank is open from ten in the morning to four in the afternoon.

Understand

Getting things done:

In chapter 6 you saw pairs like (khulnaa), to open (by itself), and (kholnaa), to open something. Many verbs have a third form with -वा- (-vaa-): (khulvaanaa), to have something opened, to get someone to open it. Anjum doesn't open the account herself; the bank does it for her: (mujhe khaataa khulvaanaa hai).

These causative verbs are regular and take (ne) in the past: (mainne foto khinchvaaeen), I had photos taken. The person who does the work takes (se): (mainne maikenik se miksar theek karvaayaa), I had the mechanic repair the mixer.

VerbHave it doneExample
(kholnaa), to open (khulvaanaa) (khaataa khulvaanaa), to open an account
(karnaa), to do (karvaanaa) (traansfar karvaanaa), to have (it) transferred
(banaanaa), to make (banvaanaa) (nayaa paasport banvaanaa), to get a new passport
(bhejnaa), to send (bhijvaanaa) (paise bhijvaanaa), to have money sent
(kheenchnaa), to take (a photo) (khinchvaanaa) (foto khinchvaanaa), to have a photo taken

Polite requests at the counter

At a bank, a post office or any office, requests are made with (aap) and usually with the compound (denaa), which makes them sound helpful rather than bossy: (yah form bhar deejiye), please fill in this form. (kripyaa), please, and (zaraa), just, a moment, soften them further.

A question with (saknaa) or the future is even more polite: (kyaa aap meree madad kar sakte hain?), could you help me? (kyaa aap yah badal denge?), would you change this?

Zaraa yah form dekh leejiye.Would you just have a look at this form?
Kripyaa yahaan saain kar deejiye.Please sign here.
Kyaa aap mujhe bataa sakte hain ki post ofis kahaan hai?Could you tell me where the post office is?

Big amounts: लाख and करोड़

Indian English and Hindi count big amounts in lakhs and crores: (ek laakh) is 100,000 and (ek karor) is 10,000,000 (a hundred lakh). The commas are placed differently too: 1,50,000 is (dedh laakh). The fraction words from A1 work with them: , , (savaa, dedh, dhaaee).

WrittenHindiIn English
