Common questions

Is it free?

Yes. All chapters, recordings, quizzes and tools are free to use. There is no paid version.

Do I need an account?

No. You can start any course straight away, and your progress is saved in your browser. A free account keeps it safe and lets you continue on other devices.

I've never studied a language before. Is this for me?

Yes. The Beginner level (A1) assumes no prior knowledge. Grammar is explained in plain English, and every new word comes with its meaning and a recording.

Which Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese do you teach?

The standard language: the Spanish of Spain, the French of France, standard German, standard Italian and the Portuguese of Brazil, all understood everywhere. Where regions differ, the course points it out, for example Austria and Switzerland for German. Spanish has a page on how Latin American Spanish differs, and Portuguese one on how the Portuguese of Portugal differs.

Do I need to learn the Hindi, Japanese, Korean or Chinese script first?

Not at the start. Every word and sentence is shown in its own script with a Latin-letter spelling underneath (for Chinese, pinyin with tone marks). Chapter 1 explains how the script works, and reference pages with audio cover it in full, so you can learn to read at your own pace: Devanagari, hiragana and katakana, Hangul, pinyin and tones.

More questions, about the levels, the audio and how this differs from apps, are on theAbout page.
