Nikhil
हेलो तन्वी! मुंबई में मौसम कैसा है?
Helo Tanvee! Mumbaee men mausam kaisaa hai?
Hi Tanvi! What's the weather like in Mumbai?
Tanvi
यहाँ तीन दिन से बारिश हो रही है। दिल्ली में?
Yahaan teen din se baarish ho rahee hai. Dillee men?
It's been raining here for three days. And in Delhi?
Nikhil
यहाँ बहुत गर्मी है, चालीस डिग्री।
Yahaan bahut garmee hai, chaalees digree.
It's very hot here, forty degrees.
Tanvi
चालीस! तुम अगले हफ़्ते मुंबई आओगे न?
Chaalees! Tum agle hafte Mumbaee aaoge na?
Forty! You're coming to Mumbai next week, aren't you?
Nikhil
हाँ, मैं शुक्रवार को आऊँगा। क्या तब भी बारिश होगी?
Haan, main shukravaar ko aaoongaa. Kyaa tab bhee baarish hogee?
Yes, I'll come on Friday. Will it still be raining then?
Tanvi
शायद। जुलाई में यहाँ हर दिन बारिश होती है। छाता लाओ।
Shaayad. Julaaee men yahaan har din baarish hotee hai. Chhaataa laao.
Maybe. In July it rains here every day. Bring an umbrella.
Nikhil
ठीक है। मौसम ठंडा होगा?
Theek hai. Mausam thandaa hogaa?
OK. Will it be cool?
Tanvi
ठंडा नहीं, लेकिन दिल्ली से कम गर्मी होगी, तीस डिग्री के आस-पास।
Thandaa naheen, lekin Dillee se kam garmee hogee, tees digree ke aas-paas.
Not cool, but less hot than Delhi, around thirty degrees.
Nikhil
बहुत अच्छा। हम मरीन ड्राइव पर घूमेंगे।
Bahut achchhaa. Ham Mareen Draaiv par ghoomenge.
Great. We'll go for a walk on Marine Drive.
Tanvi
हाँ, ज़रूर। बारिश में भी मरीन ड्राइव बहुत सुंदर लगता है।
Haan, zaroor. Baarish men bhee Mareen Draaiv bahut sundar lagtaa hai.
Yes, of course. Marine Drive looks really beautiful in the rain too.
Understand
The future: आऊँगा, आएगा
To say what will happen, add a future ending to the verb without -ना (-naa). The ending changes for the person, and for men and women: (main aaoongaa), I'll come (a man); (main aaoongee), I'll come (a woman). Tanvi asks her brother (tum aaoge?); to a woman friend she would say (tum aaogee?).
(honaa, to be) has a short future: (hogaa), (hogee), (honge), (hongee). (baarish, rain) is feminine, so it's (baarish hogee), it will rain. A few verbs are short too: (lenaa) → (main loongaa), (denaa) → (main doongaa).
| Person | a man, men | a woman, women |
|---|---|---|
| (main) | (aaoongaa) | (aaoongee) |
| (tum) | (aaoge) | (aaogee) |
| (aap) | (aayenge) | (aayengee) |
| (vah) | (aayegaa) | (aayegee) |
| (ham), (ve) | (aayenge) | (aayengee) |
Talking about the weather
In Hindi, rain “happens”: (baarish ho rahee hai), it's raining. For heat and cold, use the nouns (garmee, heat) and (thand, cold) with (hai): (bahut garmee hai), it's very hot. Both are feminine.
| Hindi | Meaning |
|---|---|
| (mausam achchhaa hai.) | The weather is nice. |
| (baarish ho rahee hai.) | It's raining. |
| (bahut garmee hai.) | It's very hot. |
| (bahut thand hai.) | It's very cold. |
| (dhoop hai.) | It's sunny. |
| (havaa chal rahee hai.) | It's windy. |
| (aaj tees digree hai.) | It's thirty degrees today. |
Seasons
In most of India there are three main seasons. (garmee), summer, is roughly March to June. The monsoon, (barsaat) or (maansoon), brings rain from about June to September. (sardee), winter, lasts from about November to February, and in the north it can be really cold.
“In summer” and “in winter” are usually said in the plural: (garmiyon men), (sardiyon men). You know the -on ending from chapter 2.
- दिल्ली में गर्मियों में बहुत गर्मी होती है।Dillee men garmiyon men bahut garmee hotee hai.In Delhi it's very hot in summer.
- सर्दियों में यहाँ बहुत ठंड होती है।Sardiyon men yahaan bahut thand hotee hai.It's very cold here in winter.
- कल बारिश होगी।Kal baarish hogee.It will rain tomorrow.
