12 lines, with a translation of each

In this chapter you'll learn to

  • Say how you feel with मुझे (mujhe) and a feeling
  • React to good and bad news
  • Say “each other” with एक-दूसरे (ek-doosre)
  • Give a friend advice with क्यों न (kyon na)

Listen

In their flat in Hyderabad, Pooja notices that her flatmate Sneha looks unhappy. Listen to the whole dialogue first, then line by line.

Speed:
  1. Pooja

Snehaa, kyaa huaa? Tum bahut udaas lag rahee ho.

Sneha, what's wrong? You look very sad.

  2. Sneha

Nidhi se meraa jhagraa ho gayaa. Ham do hafte se ek-doosre se baat naheen kar rahee hain.

I've had a fight with Nidhi. We haven't spoken to each other for two weeks.

  3. Pooja

Are! Kyon? Tum donon to bahut achchhee dost ho.

Oh no! Why? You two are such good friends.

  4. Sneha

Mere janmdin par vah naheen aaee, aur usne fon bhee naheen kiyaa. Mujhe bahut buraa lagaa, aur gussaa bhee aayaa.

She didn't come on my birthday, and she didn't even call. I was really hurt, and angry too.

  5. Pooja

Tumne usse poochhaa ki vah kyon naheen aaee?

Did you ask her why she didn't come?

  6. Sneha

Naheen. Agle din uskaa maisej aayaa thaa, lekin mainne javaab naheen diyaa.

No. She sent me a message the next day, but I didn't reply.

  7. Pooja

Dekho, Nidhi aisee larkee naheen hai. Aur mainne sunaa hai ki us hafte uskee mammee aspataal men theen.

Look, Nidhi isn't like that. And I've heard that her mum was in hospital that week.

  8. Sneha

Kyaa? Mujhe yah naheen pataa thaa. Yah sunkar mujhe bahut dukh huaa.

What? I didn't know that. I'm so sorry to hear it.

  9. Pooja

To kyon na tum aaj hee use fon kar lo? Mujhe yakeen hai ki vah bhee tumse baat karnaa chaahtee hai.

So why don't you call her today? I'm sure she wants to talk to you too.

  10. Sneha

Lekin mujhe dar lag rahaa hai ki vah mujhse naaraaz hogee.

But I'm afraid she'll be cross with me.

  11. Pooja

Chintaa mat karo. Doston men kabhee-kabhee aisaa hotaa hai. Bas use sach bataa do ki tumhen buraa lagaa thaa.

Don't worry. These things happen between friends. Just tell her honestly that you were hurt.

  12. Sneha

Theek hai, main abhee use fon kartee hoon. Shukriyaa, Poojaa. Tum sach men meree sabse achchhee dost ho.

All right, I'll call her right now. Thanks, Pooja. You really are my best friend.

Understand

I felt hurt: feelings with मुझे

Many feelings work like (pasand): the person takes (mujhe), (tumhen), (aapko), (use), and the feeling is the subject. Hindi says the feeling “happens”, “comes” or “is felt” to you: (mujhe dukh huaa), I was sad, I was sorry; (mujhe gussaa aayaa), I got angry; (mujhe dar lagtaa hai), I'm afraid. You already know (mazaa aayaa) and (bhookh lagee hai).

Each feeling goes with its own verb, so learn them as phrases. The verb agrees with the feeling, not with the person, so a woman also says (mujhe gussaa aayaa). Some feelings are adjectives instead, with a normal subject: (main udaas hoon), I'm sad; (vah mujhse naaraaz hai), she's cross with me.

HindiMeaning
(mujhe khushee huee.)I was glad, pleased.
(mujhe dukh huaa.)I was sad, sorry.
(mujhe buraa lagaa.)I was hurt, I minded.
(mujhe dar lagtaa hai.)I'm afraid (in general).
(mujhe dar lag rahaa hai.)I'm afraid (right now).
(mujhe us par gussaa aayaa.)I got angry with him, with her.

Reacting to news, and each other

To react to news, use the -कर (-kar) form from chapter 1: (yah sunkar mujhe bahut dukh huaa), literally “having heard this, I felt great sorrow”: I'm so sorry to hear that. With good news, say (khushee huee) instead. … (mujhe yakeen hai ki …) means “I'm sure that …”.

(ek-doosre) means “each other”. It takes the postposition the verb needs: (ek-doosre se baat karnaa), to talk to each other; (ek-doosre ko jaannaa), to know each other; (ek-doosre kee madad karnaa), to help each other.

Yah sunkar mujhe bahut khushee huee.I'm very happy to hear that.
Ham ek-doosre ko bachpan se jaante hain.We've known each other since childhood.
Ve hameshaa ek-doosre kee madad karte hain.They always help each other.

Advice to a friend: क्यों न …?

…? (kyon na …?), literally “why not …?”, is a gentle way to suggest something. The verb is in the subjunctive, the form you know from (chalen?): (kyon na tum use fon kar lo?), why don't you call her? For (tum) the subjunctive looks just like the -ओ (-o) command form; for (aap) it is -एँ (-en): (kyon na aap unse baat karen?).

You can also give advice with (chaahiye) from A2, or more directly with a command softened by (bas), just: (bas use sach bataa do), just tell her the truth.

HindiMeaning
(kyon na tum usse baat karo?)Why don't you talk to her?
(tumhen usse baat karnee chaahiye.)You should talk to her.
(bas use sach bataa do.)Just tell her the truth.
(chintaa mat karo.)Don't worry.
