Listen
In Sejong, librarian Kwon Soyeon presents a mobile library project for rural villages to a city committee. The chair introduces her, and committee member Mr Heo asks questions. Everyone speaks 합니다체. Listen to the whole dialogue first, then line by line.
Chair
Daeumeun Kwon Soyeon ssiui balpyoga itgetseumnida. Sijakhae jusipsio.
Next, we have a presentation from Ms Kwon Soyeon. Please begin.
Soyeon
Gamsahamnida. Sejongsi doseogwan saseo Kwon Soyeonimnida. Oneureun nongchon maeureul wihan idong doseogwan saeobe daehae malsseumdeurigetseumnida. Meonjeo hyeonjae sanghwangeul boyeo deurigo, daeumeuro wonineul bunseokhan dwi, majimageuro haegyeolchaegeul jeanhagetseumnida.
Thank you. I'm Kwon Soyeon, a librarian with Sejong City libraries. Today I'd like to talk about a mobile library project for rural villages. First I'll show you the current situation, next I'll look at the causes, and finally I'll propose a solution.
Soyeon
Hwamyeonui geuraepeureul bwa jusipsio. Bosidasipi nongchon jiyeok jumindeurui doseogwan iyongnyureun jinan o nyeon dongan gyesok gamsohaetseumnida. Banmyeon dosi jiyeogeseoneun ohiryeo jeunggahaetseumnida.
Please look at the graph on the screen. As you can see, library use among residents of rural areas has fallen steadily over the last five years. In urban areas, on the other hand, it has actually risen.
Soyeon
Geureotamyeon wonineun mueosilkkayo? Jumindeuri doseogwane oji motaneun geoseun baro geori ttaemunimnida. Gajang gakkaun doseogwankkaji beoseuro han sigan neomge geollineun maeuldo itseumnida. Teuki eoreusindeulgwa eorinideuregeneun keun budamimnida.
So what is the cause? What keeps residents from coming to the library is, quite simply, distance. There are villages where the nearest library is more than an hour away by bus. That's a heavy burden, especially for older people and children.
Soyeon
Geuraeseo jeohuineun idong doseogwaneul jeanhamnida. Chaegeul sireun beoseuga iljuire han beonssik gak maeureul chajaganeun bangsigimnida. Mueotboda jumindeuri jikjeop idonghaji anado doendaneun jeomi gajang keun jangjeomimnida.
So we propose a mobile library: a bus loaded with books that visits each village once a week. Above all, its biggest advantage is that residents don't have to travel themselves.
Soyeon
Jeongnihajamyeon, nongchon jumindeurui dokseo hwangyeongeul bakkul su inneun geoseun baro chajaganeun seobiseuimnida. Isangeuro balpyoreul machigetseumnida. Jilmuni isseusimyeon malsseumhae jusipsio.
To sum up, what can change the reading situation for rural residents is a service that goes to them. That concludes my presentation. If you have any questions, please go ahead.
Mr Heo
Balpyo jal deureotseumnida. Geureonde beoseureul unyeongharyeomyeon biyongi kkwae deul geot gateunde, yesaneun eoneu jeongdoro yesanghasimnikka?
Thank you for the presentation. But running a bus looks as though it would cost quite a lot. What sort of budget do you expect?
Soyeon
Joeun jilmun gamsahamnida. Beoseu guip biyongeun gukbi jiwoneul badeul su isseoseo siui budameun keuji anseumnida. Daman jeonghwakhan unyeongbineun gwallyeon buseowa hwagin hue dapbyeondeurigetseumnida.
Thank you for a good question. The bus itself can be bought with national government funding, so the cost to the city isn't great. However, I'll check the exact running costs with the department concerned and get back to you.
Mr Heo
Geureokunyo. Han gaji deo jilmunhagetseumnida. Yojeumeun jeonjachaekdo maneunde guji jongichaegeul sitgo danil piryoga itseumnikka?
I see. One more question. There are plenty of e-books these days, so is there really any need to drive paper books around?
Soyeon
Jega jedaero ihaehaetdamyeon, jeonjachaegeuro daesinhal su itji anneunyaneun malsseumisijiyo? Mullon jeonjachaekdo hamkke jegonghal gyehoegimnida. Geureona iyongjaui daebubuni eoreusindeurigi ttaemune jongichaegiyamallo gajang piryohan jaryoimnida.
If I've understood you correctly, you're asking whether e-books couldn't replace them? Of course, we plan to offer e-books as well. But since most users are older people, paper books are exactly what they need most.
Mr Heo
Ne, chungbunhi ihaehaetseumnida. Maeul eoreusindeulkkeseo joahasigenneyo. Teuki gyeoureneun bakke nagasigiga eoryeousinikkayo.
Yes, that's perfectly clear. The older people in the villages will be pleased. Especially in winter, when it's hard for them to go out.
Chair

Ms Kwon, thank you for your work. Please email today's presentation materials to the committee members.
