Minho

Where do you live, Eunji?
Eunji

Jeoneun jihacheollyeok geuncheoe sarayo. Uri jibeun bangi du gae isseoyo. Hajiman jom jagayo.
I live near the subway station. My place has two rooms, but it's a bit small.
Understand
Where things are: 위에, 옆에, 앞에
To say where something is, Korean puts a position word after the place, then 에 and (isseoyo). (chaeksang wie isseoyo) is word for word “desk top at is”: it's on the desk. English says “on the desk”; Korean says “the desk's top”.
You can chain places: (chimdae yeop chaeksang wie) is “on the desk next to the bed”. Only the last position word takes 에.
| Korean | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| (wi) | on, above | (chaeksang wie), on the desk |
| (arae) / (mit) | under, below | (chimdae mite), under the bed |
| (ap) | in front of | (changmun ape), in front of the window |
| (dwi) | behind | (jip dwie), behind the house |
| (yeop) | next to | (bueok yeope), next to the kitchen |
| (an) | in, inside | (bang ane), in the room |
Describing: 커요, 작아요, 깨끗해요
Words like (keoyo), it's big, (jagayo), it's small, (neolbeoyo), it's spacious, and (kkaekkeutaeyo), it's clean, are descriptive verbs: they already contain “is”, like (bissayo) in chapter 2. The thing you describe takes 이 / 가: (bangi keoyo), the room is big.
Join two sentences with (geurigo), and, or (hajiman), but, at the start of the second one. To stress a contrast, you can mark both things with 은 / 는: (bangeun keoyo. hajiman bueokeun jagayo), the room is big, but the kitchen is small.
- 방이 넓어요. 그리고 깨끗해요.Bangi neolbeoyo. Geurigo kkaekkeutaeyo. The room is spacious. And it's clean.
- 창문이 커요. 하지만 방은 작아요.Changmuni keoyo. Hajiman bangeun jagayo. The window is big. But the room is small.
Colours
Colours are nouns ending in (saek), colour. Put one before another noun to describe it: (hayansaek chimdae), a white bed. Or use it with (ieyo): (chimdaeneun hayansaegieyo), the bed is white.
To ask where someone lives, say (eodie sarayo?). (sarayo) comes from (salda), to live.
| Colour | Korean |
|---|---|
| red | (ppalgansaek) |
| blue | (paransaek) |
| yellow | (noransaek) |
| green | (choroksaek) |
| white | (hayansaek) |
| black | (geomeunsaek) |
