Joayo. Jeoneun Hallasane jaju gayo. Gachi gayo.
Great. I often go up Hallasan. Let's go together.
Understand
Will: -(으)ㄹ 거예요
-(으)ㄹ 거예요 talks about the future. After a vowel or ㄹ, add -ㄹ 거예요: → (gal geoyeyo), → (ilhal geoyeyo), → (sal geoyeyo). After a consonant, add -을 거예요: → (meogeul geoyeyo), → (joeul geoyeyo).
About yourself it's a plan: , I'm going to work here from April. About other people, the weather or anything you can't be sure of, it's a guess: (naeil biga ol geoyeyo), it'll probably rain tomorrow. For “won't”, put before the verb: (an chuul geoyeyo), it won't be cold.
Weather forecasts on TV use the formal -겠습니다 instead. You only need to recognise it: (naeireun malgetseumnida), it will be sunny tomorrow.
- 내일은 비가 올 거예요.Naeireun biga ol geoyeyo. It'll probably rain tomorrow.
- 주말에 한라산에 갈 거예요.Jumare Hallasane gal geoyeyo.I'm going to go up Hallasan at the weekend.
- 제주도는 서울보다 따뜻할 거예요.Jejudoneun Seoulboda ttatteutal geoyeyo.Jeju will probably be warmer than Seoul.
- 내일 제주도는 오후에 비가 오겠습니다.Naeil Jejudoneun ohue biga ogetseumnida.Tomorrow it will rain on Jeju in the afternoon. (a forecast)
Hot, cold, rain and wind
(deopda, to be hot) and (chupda, to be cold) are ㅂ verbs, like in chapter 4: before a vowel, the ㅂ becomes 우. So (deowoyo), (deowosseoyo), (deoul geoyeyo), (deoun yeoreum), a hot summer; and (chuwoyo), (chuwosseoyo), (chuul geoyeyo).
In Korean, rain and snow “come”: (biga wayo), it's raining; (nuni wayo), it's snowing. The wind “blows”: (barami bureoyo), it's windy. (mani), a lot, much, makes it stronger: (biga mani wayo), it rains a lot. It comes from (manta), to be many, to be a lot. Temperatures use Sino-Korean numbers and (do), degrees Celsius; below zero is (yeongha): (yeongha o do), minus five.
| Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|
| (malgayo) | it's sunny, it's clear |
| (heuryeoyo) | it's cloudy |
| (biga wayo) | it's raining |
| (nuni wayo) | it's snowing |
| (barami bureoyo) | it's windy |
| (deowoyo) | it's hot |
| (chuwoyo) | it's cold |
| (ttatteutaeyo) | it's warm |
| (siwonhaeyo) | it's cool, pleasantly fresh |
If and when: -(으)면
-(으)면 means “if” or “when”. After a vowel or ㄹ, add -면; after a consonant, -으면: → (omyeon), → (joeumyeon), → (salmyeon). ㅂ verbs change as usual: (chuumyeon), if it's cold.
The part with -면 always comes first, and only the last verb shows the tense: (nalssiga joeumyeon Hallasane gal geoyeyo), if the weather is good, I'll go up Hallasan. With the present at the end, it's something that happens every time: , when it rains, it's windy too.
- 비가 오면 집에 있을 거예요.Biga omyeon jibe isseul geoyeyo. If it rains, I'll stay at home.
- 시간이 있으면 같이 가요.Sigani isseumyeon gachi gayo.If you have time, let's go together.
- 추우면 따뜻한 물을 드세요.Chuumyeon ttatteutan mureul deuseyo. If you're cold, have some warm water.
More in the grammar: If sentences: -(으)면, -(으)려면, -다면, -았/었더라면 · Irregular verbs: ㅂ, ㄷ, ㅅ, 르, ㅎ (and ㅡ, ㄹ stems) · The future: -(으)ㄹ 거예요, -겠-, -(으)ㄹ게요
