Hopes and wishes
Huimanggwa kkum
Talk about hopes and dreams in Korean: I hope (-았/었으면 좋겠다), supposing (-다면), he wants to (-고 싶어 하다) and polite requests.
In this chapter you'll learn to
- Say what you hope or wish with -았/었으면 좋겠어요
- Imagine a situation with -다면 (if, supposing)
- Say what someone else wants with -고 싶어 하다
- Ask for help politely with -아/어 주실 수 있어요?
Listen
At home in Chuncheon, Yoon Chaewon, 18, tells her father that she wants to study design in Seoul. Listen to the whole dialogue first, then line by line.
Chaewon
Appa, jamkkan iyagi jom hal su isseoyo?
Dad, can we talk for a minute?
Father
Geurae, museun iriya?
Sure, what is it?
Chaewon
Jeo Seoureseo dijaineul gongbuhago sipeoyo. Geuge je kkumieyo.

Seoul? Chuncheoneseo gongbuhamyeon an dwae?
Seoul? Can't you study in Chuncheon?
Chaewon

There are more good design schools in Seoul. Later on I'd like to study abroad too.
Father
Yuhakdo? Appaneun jom geokjeongdwae. Honja Seoureseo sal su itgesseo?
Abroad too? I'm a bit worried. Do you think you can live in Seoul on your own?
Chaewon

Have you talked to Mum about it too?
Chaewon
Ne. Eommaneun gwaenchantaeyo. Appado heorakhae jusyeosseumyeon jokesseoyo.
Yes. Mum says it's fine. I'd like you to say yes too, Dad.
Father
Geureom gyehoegeun isseo? Siheomeun eonjeya?
So do you have a plan? When's the exam?
Chaewon
Siheomeun daeum darigo, gyeolgwaneun sibiwore nawayo. Appa, jeo jom eungwonhae jusil su isseoyo?
The exam is next month, and the results come out in December. Dad, could you support me?
Father
Arasseo. Nega wonhamyeon hae bwa. Appado nega kkok hapgyeokhaesseumyeon joketda.
All right. If it's what you want, go for it. I really hope you get in too.
Understand
I hope, I wish: -
To say what you hope for, put the verb in the past, add -으면 (if) and then (jokesseoyo), “it would be good”: (hapgyeokhaesseumyeon jokesseoyo), I hope I pass. Literally it's “if I had passed, it would be good”. After a noun, use -이었으면 / -였으면: (jumarieosseumyeon jokesseoyo), I wish it were the weekend.
The same pattern covers hopes that may come true and wishes that can't: (kiga jom keosseumyeon jokesseoyo), I wish I were a bit taller. When you say it about the listener, it becomes a gentle request: (appado heorakhae jusyeosseumyeon jokesseoyo), I'd like you to say yes too.
For formal wishes, in cards, speeches and emails, use -기를 바라다: (joeun gyeolgwaga itgireul baramnida), I hope you get a good result.
| Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|
| (Naeil biga an wasseumyeon jokesseoyo.) | I hope it doesn't rain tomorrow. |
| (Sigani deo isseosseumyeon jokesseoyo.) | I wish I had more time. |
| (Ppalli naeusyeosseumyeon jokesseoyo.) | I hope you get better soon. (to an older person) |
| (Geonganghasigireul baramnida.) | I wish you good health. (formal) |
Supposing: -다면
You know -(으)면 (if, when) from A2 for real conditions: (biga omyeon jibe isseul geoyeyo), if it rains I'll stay home. For something you are only imagining, or something less likely, take the plain style (chapter 2) and add -면: (doni mantamyeon), if I had a lot of money; (hapgyeokhandamyeon), if I get in; (haksaengiramyeon), if I were a student.
(manyak), “if, supposing”, often starts the sentence and makes it clear an if is coming. The second half usually says what you would do, with -(으)ㄹ 거예요 or a wish.
Manyak doni mantamyeon segye yeohaengeul hal geoyeyo. If I had a lot of money, I'd travel around the world.
Jega daehaksaengiramyeon yuhageul gago sipeoyo. If I were a university student, I'd want to study abroad.
Sigani itdamyeon gachi gayo.If you have time, let's go together.
She wants to…, could you…?
-고 싶어요 (want to) is for you and me. For someone else, add -어하다 just as with feelings in chapter 4: (eonniga yuhageul gago sipeo haeyo), my sister wants to study abroad. Another way to talk about what someone wants is (wonhada), to want, to wish for: (nega wonhamyeon hae bwa), if it's what you want, go for it.
For polite requests you know -아 / -어 주세요 and -아 / -어 주시겠어요? (A2). Two more are very common: -아 / -어 주실 수 있어요?, could you…? (, eungwonhae jusil su isseoyo?, could you support me?), and -아 / -어 주시면 좋겠어요, I'd appreciate it if you…
| Request | Feel |
|---|---|
| (Dowajuseyo.) | Please help me. (direct) |
| (Dowajusil su isseoyo?) | Could you help me? (polite) |
| (Dowajusigesseoyo?) | Would you help me? (polite) |
| (Dowajusimyeon jokesseoyo.) | I'd appreciate your help. (gentle, indirect) |
