Understand

Have you ever…? -아 / -어 봤어(요)

In chapter 7, -아 / -어 보다 meant “try”: (ibeo bwado dwaeyo?), may I try it on? In the past, it says what you have done or experienced: (Yeosue ga bwasseoyo), I've been to Yeosu; (hoereul meogeo bwasseoyo), I've tried raw fish. As a question, it asks about experience: (ga bwasseo?), have you been?

For “I haven't”, put (an) or (mot) before the verb: (ajik mot ga bwasseo), I haven't been yet (I haven't had the chance). In 반말, (ga bwa) and (meogeo bwa) are friendly advice: go there, try it.

  • 제주도에 가 봤어요?Jejudoe ga bwasseoyo?Have you been to Jeju?
  • 아니, 아직 못 먹어 봤어.Ani, ajik mot meogeo bwasseo. No, I haven't tried it yet.
  • 오동도는 꼭 가 봐.Odongdoneun kkok ga bwa.Make sure you go to Odongdo.

Planning a trip

Almost every ending from A2 helps when you plan something. Here they are in 반말, as friends use them. For the polite style, add 요, with two exceptions: -(으)ㄹ 거야 becomes -(으)ㄹ 거예요, and -자 becomes the plain present: (gachi gayo), let's go together.

Remember the 르 verbs from chapter 10: 르 becomes ㄹㄹ before -아 / -어. (bureuda), to sing → (bulleo), (noraereul bulleosseo), I sang; (moreuda) → (molla), I don't know. (norae) is a song, so is to sing.

A few everyday words from the dialogue: (yeppeuda), to be pretty, beautiful, drops its ㅡ like : (yeppeo), (yeppeosseo). (neomu) means “so, too”: , it was so beautiful. (joketda) means “lucky you, that sounds great”, and (arasseo) is the 반말 “OK, got it”.

PatternExampleMeaning
