Listen

In a café in Seochon, Seoul, university friends Song Yerin and Hong Jinu meet after ten years. Yerin takes a call from her publisher in the middle (반말 / 합니다체). Listen to the whole dialogue first, then line by line.

Speed:
  1. Jinu

Song Yerin! Jinjja oraenmanida. Ige myeot nyeon maniya? Neo hanado an byeonhaetda.

Song Yerin! It's been ages. How many years has it been? You haven't changed a bit.

  2. Yerin

Hong Jinu, neodo yeojeonhane. Joreophago beolsseo sip nyeoniya. Sewol jinjja ppareuda. Geudongan eotteoke jinaesseo? Junggane yeollagi kkeunkyeoseo gunggeumhaetgeodeun.

Hong Jinu, you're the same as ever too. It's already ten years since we graduated. Time really flies. How have you been? We lost touch along the way, so I've been wondering, you know.

  3. Jinu

Na? Sam nyeon jeone toesahaesseo. Geurigo chingurang gachi aep mandeuneun hoesareul changeophaetji. Cheoeumen gosaeng mani haenneunde yojeumeun jom jarireul jabasseo.

Me? I quit my job three years ago. Then I started a company that makes apps with a friend. It was really hard at first, but these days we're fairly well established.

  4. Yerin

Daebak, nega sajangnimiya? Yeoksi neon bari neolbeoseo mwol haedo jalhal jul arasseo. Naneun jangnyeone cheot soseoreul naesseo. Gieongna? Na yennalbuteo jakgaga doego sipdago haetjana.

Wow, you're the boss? I always knew you'd do well at whatever you did, with all the people you know. As for me, I published my first novel last year. Remember? I always said I wanted to be a writer.

  5. Jinu

Dangyeonhi gieokhaji. Gyeolguk kkumeul irwonne! Jinjja chukhahae. Nado geuttae neocheoreom hago sipeun geol haetdeoramyeon jom deo iljjik haengbokhaesseul tende.

Of course I remember. So you made your dream come true in the end! Congratulations. If I'd done what I wanted back then, like you, I'd have been happy sooner.

  6. Yerin

Ei, nado swipjineun anasseo. Chulpansa yeol gundeeseo geojeoldanghaetgeodeun. Geuttae pogihaesseumyeon eojjeol ppeonhaesseo. A, jamkkanman. Chulpansa daepyonim jeonhwaya. Badaya dwae.

Oh, come on, it wasn't easy for me either. Ten publishers turned me down, you see. Imagine if I'd given up then. Oh, hang on. It's the head of my publishing house. I have to take this.

  7. Yerin

Ne, daepyonim. Song Yerinimnida. Annyeonghasimnikka. Ne, jigeum tonghwa gwaenchanseumnida. Malsseumhasipsio.

Yes, Director. This is Song Yerin. Good afternoon. Yes, I can talk now. Please go ahead.

  8. Yerin

A, du beonjjae chaek gyeyak malsseumisimnikka? Jeongmal gamsahamnida. Ne, wongoneun daeum dal malkkaji bonae deurigetseumnida. Iljeongi jogeum ppadeutadeorado kkok matchugetseumnida.

Oh, you mean the contract for my second book? Thank you so much. Yes, I'll send you the manuscript by the end of next month. Even if the schedule is a little tight, I'll make sure I meet it.

  9. Yerin

Ne, algetseumnida. Gyeyakseoneun imeillo hwaginhagetseumnida. Gamsahamnida, daepyonim. Deureogasipsio.

Yes, understood. I'll check the contract by email. Thank you, Director. Goodbye.

  10. Jinu

Wa, neo banggeum wanjeon ttansaram gatasseo. Daepyonimi mworago hasyeosseo?

Wow, you sounded like a completely different person just now. What did the director say?

  11. Yerin

Du beonjjae chaekdo gyeyakhajago hasyeosseo. Yoyakhajamyeon, cheot chaegi saenggakboda jal pallyeotdae. A, mitgijiga anne. Sip nyeon jeone nuga ireol jul aratgesseo?

She wants to sign a contract for my second book too. To sum up, my first book sold better than expected. Oh, I can't believe it. Who'd have thought it ten years ago?

  12. Jinu

Ya, oneureun naega ssolge. Geurigo ibeoneneun yeollak kkeunkiji malja.

Hey, today's on me. And let's not lose touch this time. When your second book comes out, I'll be the first to buy it.

Understand

Switching register

Yerin changes style the moment she picks up the phone. With Jinu she uses (banmal): (gunggeumhaetgeodeun), (jamkkanman), (badaya dwae). With the head of her publishing house she uses (hamnidache) with honorifics for the director and humble verbs for herself: (malsseumhasipsio), (bonae deurigetseumnida). She even ends the call with (deureogasipsio), literally “please go in”, the polite way to say goodbye on the phone.

When the director is only being talked about, the honorific stays: back in (banmal), Yerin says (gyeyakhajago hasyeosseo), she suggested a contract, with -시- (-si-) for the director but (banmal) for Jinu. Respect for the person talked about and the style used with the listener are separate choices.

MeaningWith a friendOn a work call
OK, understood (arasseo) (algetseumnida)
I'll send it (bonae julge) (bonae deurigetseumnida)
go ahead, tell me (malhae bwa) (malsseumhasipsio)
I'll check (hwaginhae bolge) (hwaginhagetseumnida)
bye (jal ga) (deureogasipsio)

B2 in one conversation

The reunion uses almost everything from this level. Regrets and hypotheticals: (haetdeoramyeon … haengbokhaesseul tende), if I had done it, I would have been happy, and (pogihaesseumyeon eojjeol ppeonhaesseo), imagine if I had given up. Concession: (swipjineun anasseo), it wasn't exactly easy, and (ppadeutadeorado), even if it's tight. Indirect speech: (gyeyakhajago hasyeosseo) and the short form (jal pallyeotdae), she says it sold well.

The friends also use nuanced endings: -잖아 (-jana), you know, for something both remember; -거든 (-geodeun), you see, to give a reason; -네 (-ne) for something just noticed. And an idiom from chapter 8: (bari neolda), to know lots of people.

Summarising

To pull things together, use (yoyakhajamyeon), to sum up, or (jeongnihajamyeon), to put it all together, both from -자면 (-jamyeon), if I were to. (gyeolguk) means “in the end, after all”, and (hanmadiro) means “in a word”. In a report or presentation they are followed by (hamnidache) or (handache); between friends they work just as well in (banmal).

Yoyakhajamyeon, cheot chaegi saenggakboda jal pallyeotdae. To sum up, she says my first book sold better than expected.
Gyeolguk Yerinineun kkumeul irwosseo. In the end, Yerin made her dream come true.
Hanmadiro sip nyeon dongan maneun geosi byeonhaetseumnida. In a word, a lot has changed in ten years.
Jeongnihajamyeon, du sarameun dasi yeollakhagiro haetda. To put it all together, the two decided to keep in touch.
