Listen
In Kobe, Hara Mizuki presents a plan for a multilingual tourist app to the city's tourism office; Mr Takagi asks questions. Listen to the whole dialogue first, then line by line.
Ms Hara
Minasama, honjitsu wa ojikan o itadaki, arigatō gozaimasu. Kabushiki gaisha Minato Dezain no Hara to mōshimasu. Honjitsu wa, gaikokujin kankōkyaku muke no tagengo kankō annai apuri ni tsuite gosetsumei itashimasu.
Thank you all for your time today. My name is Hara, from Minato Design. Today I'd like to present a multilingual tourist information app for visitors from abroad.
Ms Hara
Mazu gaiyō, tsugi ni genjō to kadai, saigo ni apuri no kinō ni tsuite ohanashi shimasu. De wa, kochira no gurafu o goran kudasai.
I'll start with an overview, then the current situation and the challenges, and finally the app's features. First, please look at this graph.
Ms Hara
Shikashi, kankō annaijo o riyō suru hito no wariai wa, wazuka ichiwari desu.
The number of foreign tourists visiting Kobe has roughly doubled in the last five years. However, only ten per cent of them use the tourist information centres.
Ms Hara
What troubles tourists isn't a lack of information. The problem is that they can't see that information on their smartphones.
Ms Hara
The app works not only in English and Chinese but in ten languages. Even in places with no internet connection, you can see the maps and information.
Ms Hara
Ijō de setsumei o owarimasu. Goshitsumon ga gozaimashitara, onegai itashimasu.
That concludes my presentation. If you have any questions, please go ahead.
Mr Takagi
Arigatō gozaimashita. Hitotsu ukagaitai no desu ga, anzenmen wa daijōbu deshō ka.
Thank you. May I ask one thing? Is it safe?
Ms Hara
Goshitsumon arigatō gozaimasu. Kojin jōhō no kanri ni tsuite, to iu koto deshō ka. Anshin shite tsukaeru kara koso, kankōkyaku ni erabareru to kangaete orimasu.
Thank you for your question. Do you mean how personal data is handled? The app doesn't collect names or addresses at all. We believe that it's precisely because people can use it without worry that tourists will choose it.
Mr Takagi
Naruhodo. Mō itten, nenkan no un'eihi wa dono kurai kakaru mikomi desu ka.
I see. One more point: how much do you expect it to cost to run each year?
Ms Hara
I'm sorry. I don't have the exact figures with me right now, so I'll check and get back to you later.
Mr Takagi
Wakarimashita.
All right. Could you send them by email, together with the documents?
Ms Hara
Kashikomarimashita. Honjitsuchū ni ookuri itashimasu. Honjitsu wa arigatō gozaimashita.
Certainly. I'll send them today. Thank you very much for today.
Understand
Signposting a talk
A Japanese presentation is formal: humble language for yourself, honorific language for the audience. Thank people for their time and introduce yourself with ~と申します (to mōshimasu). Say what you'll talk about, 本日は~についてご説明いたします (honjitsu wa … ni tsuite gosetsumei itashimasu), and in what order: (mazu), (tsugi ni), (saigo ni).
Point to a slide with ~をご覧ください (o goran kudasai), please look at …, move on with (tsuzukimashite), next, and finish with 以上で~を終わります (ijō de … o owarimasu), that concludes …
| Purpose | Japanese |
|---|---|
| opening | (Honjitsu wa ojikan o itadaki, arigatō gozaimasu.) |
| pointing to a slide | (Kochira no gurafu o goran kudasai.) |
| moving on | (Tsuzukimashite, kadai ni tsuite ohanashi shimasu.) |
| ending | (Ijō de setsumei o owarimasu.) |
| final thanks | (Goseichō arigatō gozaimashita.) |
Handling questions
The question-and-answer session is (shitsugi ōtō). Thank the person first: (goshitsumon arigatō gozaimasu). If you're not sure what they mean, check with ~ということでしょうか (to iu koto deshō ka), do you mean …? If you don't know the answer, don't guess: (kakunin shite, nochihodo okotae itashimasu), I'll check and get back to you.
People asking questions often use the humble (ukagau), to ask: (hitotsu ukagaitai no desu ga), may I ask one thing? To agree with a point, say (ossharu tōri desu), you're quite right.
Hiyō ni tsuite no goshitsumon, to iu koto deshō ka.Do you mean your question is about the cost?
Kakunin shite, nochihodo okotae itashimasu.I'll check and get back to you.
Emphasis
To put one part of a sentence in the spotlight, Japanese turns the rest into a noun with (no) and puts the key part at the end: ~のは~です (no wa … desu). (mondai na no wa, sumātofon de mirarenai koto desu), the problem is that you can't see it on a smartphone. After a noun or な-adjective, use (na no wa).
(koso) stresses a word, “precisely this”: (anshin shite tsukaeru kara koso), precisely because people can use it without worry; (kondo koso), this time for sure. (sae) means “even”, with a surprising example: (netto ni tsunagaranai basho de sae), even in places with no internet.
| Pattern | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ~のは~です (-no wa … desu) | what …, is …; it's … that … | (taisetsu na no wa tsukaiyasusa desu), what matters is ease of use |
| ~こそ (-koso) | precisely, this very … | (kondo koso), this time for sure |
| ~さえ (-sae) | even … | (kodomo de sae tsukaeru), even children can use it |
| ~だけでなく~も (-dake de naku … mo) | not only … but also … | (Eigo dake de naku Kankokugo mo), Korean as well as English |
