Listen

Back at their office in Kobe, Ikeda Sota tells Mori Chika about his weekend at Kinosaki Onsen, a hot spring town. She starts planning her own trip. Listen to the whole dialogue first, then line by line.

Speed:
  1. Ikeda

    森さん、おはようございます。これ、城崎のお土産です。

Mori-san, ohayō gozaimasu. Kore, Kinosaki no omiyage desu.

Good morning, Ms Mori. This is a little something from Kinosaki.

  2. Mori

    ありがとうございます。温泉はどうでしたか?

Arigatō gozaimasu. Onsen wa dō deshita ka?

Thank you. How were the hot springs?

  3. Ikeda

    最高でした。一泊二日で、旅館に泊まりました。

Saikō deshita. Ippaku futsuka de, ryokan ni tomarimashita.

Wonderful. I went for one night and stayed at a ryokan.

  4. Mori

    いいですね。私は城崎に行ったことがありません。

Ii desu ne. Watashi wa Kinosaki ni itta koto ga arimasen.

Lovely. I've never been to Kinosaki.

  5. Ikeda

    旅館の露天風呂から見た景色がきれいでした。

Ryokan no rotenburo kara mita keshiki ga kirei deshita.

The view from the ryokan's open-air bath was beautiful.

  6. Mori

    外湯にも入りましたか?

    Sotoyu ni mo hairimashita ka?

Did you go to the public baths in town too?

  7. Ikeda

    はい、浴衣で三つの外湯に入りました。行ってよかったです。

Hai, yukata de mittsu no sotoyu ni hairimashita. Itte yokatta desu.

Yes, I went to three of them in my yukata. I'm really glad I went.

  8. Mori

    私も行ってみたいです。カニも食べましたか?

Watashi mo itte mitai desu. Kani mo tabemashita ka?

I'd like to go too. Did you have crab as well?

  9. Ikeda

    はい。冬なので、晩ご飯はカニでした。おいしかったです。

Hai. Fuyu na node, bangohan wa kani deshita. Oishikatta desu.

Yes. Since it's winter, dinner was crab. It was delicious.

  10. Mori

    神戸から日帰りで行けますか?

Kōbe kara higaeri de ikemasu ka?

Can you do it as a day trip from Kobe?

  11. Ikeda

    行けますが、ちょっと遠いので、泊まったほうがいいと思います。

Ikemasu ga, chotto tōi node, tomatta hō ga ii to omoimasu.

You can, but it's quite far, so I think it's better to stay the night.

  12. Mori

    そうですね。来月、母と行くつもりです。おすすめの旅館を教えてください。

Sō desu ne. Raigetsu, haha to iku tsumori desu. Osusume no ryokan o oshiete kudasai.

You're right. I'm planning to go with my mother next month. Please tell me which ryokan you'd recommend.

Understand

Because: ~ので

(node) gives a reason, like (kara) in chapter 8, but it sounds softer and more polite, so it's the better choice with colleagues, staff and strangers. (kara) is fine with friends and family.

(node) follows a plain form: (tōi node), because it's far. Nouns and な-adjectives take (na) before it: (fuyu na node), because it's winter; (shizuka na node), because it's quiet. As with (kara), the reason comes first. Mr Ikeda also says (yukata de), in a yukata: (de) can mark what you wear or use.

WordWith のでMeaning
verb: (komu) (komu node)because it gets crowded
い-adjective: (tōi) (tōi node)because it's far
な-adjective: (shizuka) (shizuka na node)because it's quiet
noun: (fuyu) (fuyu na node)because it's winter

Glad I did, keen to try: ~てよかった, ~てみたい

Te-form + (yokatta), or politely (yokatta desu), means “I'm glad I did it”: (itte yokatta desu), I'm glad I went.

You know ~てみる (-te miru), try doing, and ~たい (-tai), want to, from chapter 7. Together they make ~てみたい (-te mitai), “I'd like to try”: (itte mitai desu), I'd like to go there (and see what it's like).

  • 城崎に行ってよかったです。Kinosaki ni itte yokatta desu.I'm glad I went to Kinosaki.
  • 露天風呂に入ってみたいです。Rotenburo ni haitte mitai desu.I'd like to try an open-air bath.
  • 日本語を勉強してよかったです。Nihongo o benkyō shite yokatta desu.I'm glad I studied Japanese.

A2 review: one verb, many forms

This table brings together the verb forms of A2, with (iku), to go. Almost every pattern in this level is built on one of these forms.

Form (iku)In use
polite past (ikimashita)I went (chapter 1)
te-form (itte) (itte mitai), I'd like to go
ない-form (ikanai) (ikanaide kudasai), please don't go
た-form (itta) (itta koto ga arimasu), I've been there
volitional (ikō) (issho ni ikō), let's go together
potential (ikeru) (higaeri de ikemasu), you can go as a day trip
dictionary form (iku) (iku tsumori desu), I'm planning to go

More in the grammar: Experience: ~たことがある
