  • Talk about temperatures and the seasons
  • Make predictions with the future tense: lloverá, hará sol

Listen

In October, Alejandro, who lives in Seville, phones his friend Uxía in Santiago de Compostela before his trip there. Listen to the whole dialogue first, then line by line.

Speed:
  1. Alejandro

Hola, Uxía. Oye, el lunes voy a Santiago. ¿Qué tiempo hace allí?

Hi, Uxía. Listen, I'm going to Santiago on Monday. What's the weather like there?

  2. Uxía

Hoy llueve mucho, como siempre. Y hace un poco de frío.

It's raining a lot today, as always. And it's a bit cold.

  3. Alejandro

¿Frío? Aquí en Sevilla estamos a treinta grados.

Cold? Here in Seville it's thirty degrees.

  4. Uxía

¡Treinta grados en octubre! Aquí estamos a catorce.

Thirty degrees in October! Here it's fourteen.

  5. Alejandro

¿Y la semana que viene? ¿Lloverá?

And next week? Will it rain?

  6. Uxía

El lunes y el martes hará sol, pero el miércoles lloverá otra vez.

On Monday and Tuesday it'll be sunny, but on Wednesday it'll rain again.

  7. Alejandro

    Entonces necesitaré un paraguas.

    Then I'll need an umbrella.

  8. Uxía

Sí, claro. Y por la noche hace fresco, unos diez grados.

Yes, of course. And at night it's chilly, about ten degrees.

  9. Alejandro

¿Diez grados? En Sevilla todavía no hace frío.

Ten degrees? In Seville it isn't cold yet.

  10. Uxía

Claro, pero Santiago no es Sevilla. En otoño aquí llueve mucho.

Of course, but Santiago isn't Seville. In autumn it rains a lot here.

  11. Alejandro

Bueno, no pasa nada. Me encanta la lluvia.

Well, it doesn't matter. I love the rain.

  12. Uxía

Pues Santiago te va a encantar.

Well then, you're going to love Santiago.

Understand

What's the weather like?

Ask (What's the weather like?). Many answers use + a noun: (literally “it makes cold”). Because , and are nouns, “very” is , not : .

For rain and snow there are special verbs: (it's raining, it rains) from , and (it's snowing) from . For temperature, say or .

The seasons are (spring), (summer), (autumn) and (winter).

SpanishEnglish
It's hot.
It's cold.
It's chilly. / It's cool.
It's sunny.
It's windy.
/ The weather's good. / The weather's bad.
It's raining.
It's snowing.
It's cloudy.

The future tense: regular verbs

To say what will happen, for example in a weather forecast, Spanish has a “future tense”. It's easy: take the whole infinitive and add the endings -é, -ás, -á, -emos, -éis, -án. The endings are the same for -ar, -er and -ir verbs: → (it will rain).

In conversation, + infinitive (A1) is also very common for the future: (It's going to rain).

Irregular futures: hará, tendrá, podrá

A few common verbs change their stem in the future, but the endings stay the same. You'll hear all the time in weather forecasts: (Tomorrow it will be sunny).

InfinitiveFuture stemExample
har- (It will be cold tomorrow.)
tendr- (I'll have time on Monday.)
podr- (We won't be able to go.)
saldr- (The sun will come out in the afternoon.)
vendr- (Will you come in summer?)
dir- (What will your mother say?)
