Listen
Nuria and Andrés, two friends in Barcelona, are deciding where to have dinner. Listen to the whole dialogue first, then line by line.
Andrés
Nuria, ¿te gusta la comida japonesa?
Nuria, do you like Japanese food?
Nuria
Sí, me encanta. ¿Y a ti?
Yes, I love it. And you?
Andrés
A mí no me gusta mucho. Me gustan más las tapas.
I don't like it much. I prefer tapas.
Nuria
A mí también me gustan las tapas. ¿Vamos al bar Sol?
I like tapas too. Shall we go to the Sol bar?
Andrés
Uf, no. Es muy caro. No me gustan nada los bares caros.
Oh, no. It's very expensive. I don't like expensive bars at all.
Nuria
A mí tampoco. ¿Y el bar Luna?
Me neither. What about the Luna bar?
Andrés
Sí, me encanta. Las patatas bravas son muy buenas.
Yes, I love it. The patatas bravas are very good.
Nuria
Y no es caro. Pues vamos al bar Luna.
And it isn't expensive. Let's go to the Luna bar, then.
Understand
Me gusta, me gustan
works differently from “to like”. literally means “coffee pleases me”. The thing you like is the subject, so the verb agrees with it: for one thing or an action, for more than one thing.
The little word in front shows who likes it: (me), (you), (him, her, polite you) and so on. Nouns take , , or : , never .
| Who | One thing or an action | More than one thing |
|---|---|---|
| I | ||
| you () | ||
| he, she, you () | ||
| we | ||
| you () | ||
| they, you () |
From love to hate
works exactly like and means “to love” (things, food, places): , . It's already strong, so you don't normally add .
As you know from chapter 5, goes before the verb. With it goes before , , too: . No… nada means “not at all”.

Me too, me neither
To react to what someone likes, start with (to me). Use (too) to agree with a positive sentence and (neither) to agree with a negative one. To disagree, say or .
To ask back, say (And you?).
