Giving a presentation
Fazendo uma apresentação
Give a talk in Portuguese: signposting with em primeiro lugar and por fim, emphasis with foi aí que and o que a gente quer é, and handling questions.
In this chapter you'll learn to
Listen
At a start-up event in Recife, Fernanda Lins presents her app, which connects family farmers with restaurants. Tatiana chairs the session, and Jorge, a restaurant owner, asks a question. Listen to the whole dialogue first, then line by line.
Tatiana
Boa tarde a todos. Agora quem vai apresentar é a Fernanda Lins, criadora do aplicativo Da Roça. Fernanda, fique à vontade.
Good afternoon, everyone. Next to present is Fernanda Lins, creator of the Da Roça app. Fernanda, the floor is yours.
Fernanda
Thank you, Tatiana, and thank you all for being here. First, I'll tell you how the idea came about; then, how the app works; and finally, what our plans are.
Fernanda
It all started in 2022. My grandfather has a smallholding in Vitória de Santo Antão and he sold his cassava to a middleman for just over one real a kilo. In Recife it was sold for almost five. That's when I realised something was wrong.
Fernanda
What we want is very simple: for family farmers to sell directly to restaurants, with no middleman. And it's the farmers themselves who decide the price.
Fernanda
O próximo passo é chegar à Paraíba e a Alagoas. Muito obrigada pela atenção.
As you can see in this graph, in two years we've gone from eight to a hundred and fifty farmers. And what I'd like to highlight is this: on average, each of them makes forty per cent more profit. The next step is to reach Paraíba and Alagoas. Thank you very much for your attention.
Tatiana
Obrigada, Fernanda. Alguma pergunta? Pois não, o senhor ali no fundo.
Thank you, Fernanda. Any questions? Yes, the gentleman at the back.
Jorge
Boa tarde.
Good afternoon. I have a restaurant in Boa Viagem and I found the idea very interesting. My question is this: what if one day the farmer can't deliver the order?
Fernanda
Boa pergunta.
Good question. If I've understood correctly, what worries you is running out of produce, isn't it?
Jorge
Exatamente. Num sábado, por exemplo, seria um problemão.
Exactly. On a Saturday, for example, it would be a big problem.
Fernanda
That's why we have several farmers in each area. If one can't deliver, it's the app itself that looks for another one who has the same produce. I don't have that figure right now, but I can assure you it happens very rarely.
Jorge
Ótimo. Então vou experimentar no meu restaurante. Depois a gente conversa.
Great. Then I'll try it out in my restaurant. Let's talk afterwards.
Tatiana
Thank you both. We'll now take a fifteen-minute break. Coffee is served outside.
Understand
Structuring a talk
A good talk tells the audience where it's going. Announce your plan at the start, then use signposts to move from one part to the next. Speak to the audience as ; in Brazil even a formal talk sounds friendly, and is normal for “we” in all but the most formal settings.
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| … | First (of all)… |
| … | Next, then… |
| … / … | Finally… / To conclude… |
| … | As you can see… |
| … | What I'd like to highlight is… |
| Thank you very much for your attention. |
To put the spotlight on one part of a sentence, Portuguese splits it in two with ser… que: (That's when I realised), (It's the farmers who decide). agrees with what follows it and matches the tense of the main verb.
O que… é puts the focus at the end: (What we want is very simple). In speech, Brazilians often use just after a pronoun: (Thank you).

Handling questions
When you get a question, it helps to thank the person, check you've understood, and be honest if you don't have the information. (Yes, go ahead) is a polite way to give someone the floor.

| Any questions? | |
| Good question. | |
| … | If I've understood correctly… |
| … | I don't have that figure right now, but… |
| Can I answer that at the end? |
