Listen

In June, Amanda in Aracaju phones her friend Maurício in Porto Alegre before she visits him. Listen to the whole dialogue first, then line by line.

Speed:
  1. Maurício

    Oi, Amanda. Tudo bem?

    Hi, Amanda. How are you?

  2. Amanda

Tudo ótimo. Olha, eu chego aí na sexta. Como está o tempo em Porto Alegre?

Great. Listen, I get there on Friday. What's the weather like in Porto Alegre?

  3. Maurício

Está muito frio. Hoje de manhã fez cinco graus.

It's very cold. This morning it was five degrees.

  4. Amanda

Cinco graus? Aqui em Aracaju está fazendo calor: trinta graus, e faz sol todo dia.

Five degrees? Here in Aracaju it's hot: thirty degrees, and it's sunny every day.

  5. Maurício

É, aqui o inverno é frio, como sempre. E ontem choveu o dia todo.

Yes, winter here is cold, as always. And yesterday it rained all day.

  6. Amanda

E no fim de semana? Vai chover?

And at the weekend? Is it going to rain?

  7. Maurício

A previsão do tempo diz que vai chover na sexta, mas no sábado vai fazer sol. E no domingo de manhã pode ter geada.

The weather forecast says it's going to rain on Friday, but on Saturday it'll be sunny. And on Sunday morning there may be frost.

  8. Amanda

Geada? Aqui em Aracaju isso não existe.

Frost? That doesn't exist here in Aracaju.

  9. Maurício

Então você tem que levar um casaco de inverno. E um guarda-chuva também.

Then you have to bring a winter coat. And an umbrella too.

  10. Amanda

Mas eu não tenho casaco de inverno. Aqui é verão o ano todo.

But I don't have a winter coat. It's summer all year round here.

  11. Maurício

Não tem problema. Eu tenho um casaco para você.

No problem. I've got a coat for you.

  12. Amanda

Obrigada. Então até sexta. Eu levo um pouco de sol para você.

Thanks. See you on Friday, then. I'll bring you a bit of sunshine.

The seasons in Brazil

Brazil is in the southern hemisphere, so the seasons are the other way round from Europe and North America: (summer) is from December to March and (winter) from June to September. is spring and is autumn.

In the South (Porto Alegre, Curitiba) winter is really cold, sometimes with frost. In the North and Northeast it's warm all year, and people there often call the rainy season .

Talking about the future: vai chover and choverá

In speech, the future is + infinitive, as you know from A1: (it's going to rain), .

In weather forecasts, news and writing you'll also see the “simple future”: the infinitive + -ei, -á, -emos, -ão. (It will rain in Porto Alegre tomorrow). A few verbs shorten: → , (to say) → , (to bring) → . In the present, is : (The forecast says it's going to rain). You only need to recognise these forms for now.
