Two-part connectors: zwar … aber, sowohl … als auch, je … desto

Connectors in two parts: zwar … aber, einerseits … andererseits, sowohl … als auch, nicht nur … sondern auch, weder … noch, entweder … oder and je … desto.

zwar … aber: admitting a point

… admits that something is true and then adds a contrast, like English “it's true that …, but …” or “may …, but …”: If comes first, the verb follows it: Zwar kommt man entspannter an, aber auch später.

einerseits … andererseits: weighing up

… (on the one hand … on the other hand) presents two sides. Both words count as position one: Einerseits verstehe ich das. Andererseits fahre ich gern schnell.

Both, neither, either

… means “both … and”, … “not only … but also”, … “neither … nor” and … “either … or”. They connect words or phrases and don't change the word order. … already contains the negation, so don't add or .

je … desto: the more …, the more …

+ comparative starts a clause with the verb at the end. The second part starts with (or ) + comparative, and its verb comes straight after that: In short sayings there's no verb at all:

  • Je mehr Asphalt es gibt, desto heißer wird es.The more tarmac there is, the hotter it gets.
  • Je älter man wird, desto schwieriger wird so etwas. The older you get, the harder that sort of thing becomes.
