  1. Duan Qing

Gèwèi hǎo, wǒ jiào Duàn Qīng. Jīntiān wǒ xiǎng gēn dàjiā fēnxiǎng yíxià wǒmen de xiàngmù: xiāngcūn liúdòng túshūguǎn. Shǒuxiān, wèishénme yào zuò zhège xiàngmù? Zài Yúnnán, bù shǎo xiāngcūn xuéxiào de háizi jīhū méiyǒu kèwàishū kěyǐ kàn, lí zuì jìn de túshūguǎn kāichē yě yào liǎng-sān ge xiǎoshí.

Hello, everyone. My name is Duan Qing. Today I'd like to share our project with you: a mobile library for villages. First, why this project? In Yunnan, children at many village schools have almost no books to read outside their textbooks, and the nearest library is two or three hours away by car.

  2. Duan Qing

Jiēxiàlái, wǒ jiǎndān jièshào yíxià wǒmen shì zěnme zuò de. Wǒmen bǎ yí liàng xiǎo huòchē gǎichéngle túshūguǎn, chē shang yǒu sānqiān běn shū, měi ge xīngqī qù wǔ ge cūnzi, měi ge cūnzi tíng yì tiān.

Next, I'll briefly explain how we do it. We turned a small van into a library with three thousand books on board. Every week it visits five villages and stays one day in each.

  3. Duan Qing

Xiàmian wǒmen lái kàn yíxià xiàoguǒ. Zhèngrú dàjiā zài tú shang suǒ jiàn, yì nián lái, jiè shū de háizi cóng liǎngbǎi rén zēngjiā dàole yìqiān èrbǎi rén. Shùjù hái xiǎnshì, háizimen píngjūn měi ge yuè dú sì běn shū.

Now let's look at the results. As you can see in the chart, over the past year the number of children borrowing books has risen from two hundred to twelve hundred. The figures also show that the children read four books a month on average.

  4. Mr Zhuang

Duàn nǚshì, dǎduàn yíxià. Zhège shùjù hěn ràng rén gāoxìng. Búguò wǒ xiǎng wèn yíxià chéngběn: yí liàng chē yì nián yào huā duōshao qián?

Sorry to interrupt, Ms Duan. These figures are very encouraging. But I'd like to ask about costs: how much does one van cost a year?

  5. Duan Qing

Zhège wèntí wèn de hěn hǎo. Bāokuò sījī gōngzī, yóufèi hé xīn shū, yí liàng chē yì nián dàyuē shíwǔ wàn yuán. Suàn xiàlai, měi ge háizi yì nián zhǐ yào yìbǎi duō kuài qián.

That's a very good question. Including the driver's wages, fuel and new books, one van costs about a hundred and fifty thousand yuan a year. That works out at just over a hundred yuan per child per year.

  6. Mr Zhuang

Nǐmen xiànzài zhǐ yǒu yí liàng chē. Yàoshi kuòdà dào zhěnggè Yúnnán, hái kěxíng ma?

At the moment you only have one van. Would it still be feasible if you expanded to the whole of Yunnan?

  7. Duan Qing

Rúguǒ wǒ méi lǐjiě cuò dehuà, nín shì xiǎng wèn zhège bànfǎ néng bu néng tuīguǎng. Wǒ rènwéi shì kěxíng de. Wǒmen zhīsuǒyǐ xuǎnzé liúdòng túshūguǎn, ér bú shì zài měi ge cūnzi jiàn yí ge túshūguǎn, zhèng shì yīnwèi chéngběn dī. Jiàn yí ge túshūguǎn de qián, gòu yí liàng chē pǎo wǔ nián.

If I've understood you correctly, you're asking whether the approach can be rolled out more widely. I believe it can. The very reason we chose a mobile library, rather than building a library in every village, is that it costs less. The money for one library building would keep a van on the road for five years.

  8. Mr Zhuang

Nà shū kànwánle zěnme bàn? Shíjiān cháng le, háizimen huì bu huì jiù bù gǎn xìngqù le?

And what happens when they've read all the books? Won't the children lose interest after a while?

  9. Duan Qing

No. We change the books every three months, and volunteers come to tell the children stories. In one village, even the children's grandparents have started borrowing books.

  10. Duan Qing

Zǒng ér yán zhī, liúdòng túshūguǎn chéngběn dī, xiàoguǒ hǎo, yě kěyǐ tuīguǎng. Chéng li de háizi zǒu jǐ fēnzhōng jiù néng dào túshūguǎn, nándào xiāngcūn de háizi bù yīnggāi yǒu tóngyàng de jīhuì ma? Zhè jiù shì wǒmen jīntiān lái zhèlǐ de yuányīn. Gǎnxiè gèwèi!

To sum up, a mobile library is cheap, it works, and it can be expanded. Children in the city can walk to a library in a few minutes. Shouldn't village children have the same chance? That is why we're here today. Thank you all.

  11. Mr Zhuang

Xièxie Duàn nǚshì, nín de bàogào jiǎng de hěn qīngchu. Wǒmen huì rènzhēn kǎolǜ, xià zhōu gěi nín dáfù.

Thank you, Ms Duan, that was a very clear presentation. We'll consider it carefully and give you our answer next week.

Signposting a talk

A good talk tells the audience where it is going. Open with (jīntiān wǒ xiǎng gēn dàjiā fēnxiǎng yíxià …), today I'd like to share … with you. Move on with (jiēxiàlái), next, or (xiàmian wǒmen lái kàn yíxià …), now let's look at … Point to a slide with (zhèngrú dàjiā suǒ jiàn), as you can see, where (suǒ) is the written word from chapter 4.

For figures, (shùjù xiǎnshì …) is “the figures show …”, and 从 A 增加到 B (cóng A zēngjiā dào B) “rise from A to B”. Close with (zǒng ér yán zhī), in short, a more formal (zǒngzhī), and thank people with (gǎnxiè gèwèi).

Handling questions

Thank the person and buy yourself a moment: (zhège wèntí wèn de hěn hǎo), that's a very good question. If a question isn't clear, repeat it in your own words: (rúguǒ wǒ méi lǐjiě cuò dehuà, nín shì xiǎng wèn …), if I've understood you correctly, you're asking … If you don't know the answer, say so politely: (zhè yì diǎn wǒmen hái zài yánjiū), we're still looking into that.

ChineseMeaning
(Zhège wèntí wèn de hěn hǎo.)That's a very good question.
(rúguǒ wǒ méi lǐjiě cuò dehuà …)if I've understood you correctly …
(Wǒ jiǎndān huídá yíxià.)Let me answer briefly.
(Zhè yì diǎn wǒmen hái zài yánjiū.)We're still looking into that.
(Hái yǒu bié de wèntí ma?)Are there any other questions?

Adding emphasis

(shì … de), from B1, puts the spotlight on how, when or where: (wǒ jièshào yíxià wǒmen shì zěnme zuò de), I'll explain how we do it. (zhèng shì), precisely, exactly, is a stronger (shì): (zhèng shì yīnwèi chéngběn dī), precisely because it's cheap. (zhè jiù shì …), this is (exactly) …, points to your conclusion.

(lián … dōu …) shows something surprising: (lián yéye nǎinai dōu lái jiè shū le), even the grandparents come to borrow books. And a rhetorical (nándào … ma?) at the end of a talk makes the audience think: (nándào xiāngcūn de háizi bù yīnggāi yǒu tóngyàng de jīhuì ma?), shouldn't village children have the same chance?
